Where the Journey Begins

I’m Stephen Fender. I write books, poetry, and reflective fiction about presence, becoming, and what it means to live with depth. My book In the Becoming sits at the heart of that journey, with The Nitty Gritty God carrying the poetic thread that runs alongside it. I’m also shaping new fiction projects — stories that wander into the imaginative edges of the same path.

And if you enjoy a quieter, behind-the-scenes view, there’s also a blog here where I review books, mull over writing, and share a little of my life as a writer in the North Pennines — the rhythms, the reading, and the small rituals that keep the work alive.

Meet Stephen Fender

I’m a writer drawn to the inner landscapes — the places where meaning grows, where presence steadies us, and where our becoming begins. In the Becoming is the first step in that journey, and everything I write — fiction and non-fiction — circles the same question: how do we live well in an unfinished world? My work blends reflection, story, and a gentle curiosity about what makes us human.

My poetry collection, The Nitty Gritty God: Poetry of Becoming, gathers together years of small reflections shaped by landscape, stillness, and the search for meaning. The poems are companions to my prose — concise, intimate explorations of becoming and the inner life.

What My Characters Say

The people who live in my stories often surprise me with their insight. Here’s what some of them would say if you asked them about the writing behind it all.

Stephen keeps pretending he invented me, but I’m fairly certain I wandered into his head entirely on my own. He just wrote down what I told him, which is the proper way these things should be done.

Mimsy Paloo

Stephen claims he writes slowly, thoughtfully, deliberately. I say he writes like a man trying to catch a butterfly with a teacup — careful, hopeful, and always slightly astonished when it actually works.

Oswin Blore

If there is a quiet corner of the universe where ideas gather before becoming real, I believe Stephen has been eavesdropping there for years. His work is proof that all stories begin in a deeper place than we think.
